Have you ever known anyone that tries to act like someone else? Maybe, that someone is you. Sometimes, we feel like being someone else is better than bring our “real” self. I know that has been the case with me in my past. Let me share my story and see if you can relate.
By the time I was 30, I had already had a business of my own. By the time I was 40, I had a second business and by the time I was 45, I was a corporate consultant for some of St. Louis’ largest Fortune 500 companies. I don’t say all this to brag, I want you to know this so you will understand what I am about to tell you. When I became a corporate consultant, I thought it more important to act like someone else than to be myself. Why would I do that? It boils down to the fact that I didn’t feel smart enough and thought I would be found out if I was my “real” self. Wow, what a mistake that was. It is certainly one of those things I wish I could go back and fix but we can’t go back.
What we can do is start from right here and now. If you are in a position of feeling the same way, I want to encourage you to stop it and be the “real” you God created you to be. First, let’s look at what the Bible says about you. Psalm 119:73-74 says “You made me; you created me.” Psalms 139:13-14 “You alone created my inner being. You knitted me together inside my mother. I will give thanks to you because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this.” God is saying He created you, He made you amazing, a one-of-a-kind original.
Now, let’s look at the definition of “real”. Dictionary.com defines real as existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious.
Let that really sink in. If God created you, why would He want you to be anything other than yourself? He doesn’t want you to live your life in an imaginary or fictitious way. He wants you to be “real” on purpose. He wants you to be the “real” you because that is what brings Him the most glorify. There is no one else on the face of the planet with your same DNA or same finger prints. No one! God created you and put you on this planet because He wants you here and He wants you to shine for Him by being yourself.
You can’t give what you were born to give, help those you were born to help and create what you were born to create by being someone else. It just doesn’t work. Psalm 139:16 says “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” Do you hear that. God created you for a purpose and you can’t live out your purpose by trying to be someone else.
The next time you are tempted to compare yourself to others, listen to what God says about you and embrace your “real” self, full out and on purpose. That is where your real confidence comes from!
